Hi, I’ve been smoking for a long time now and I don’t have plans of stopping – yet. I’ve have life insurance from a local life insurance company here Houston, Texas and I know that I don’t have to pay that much on premiums once I stop. Is there any other way for me, and for other smokers out there?

Gary

Houston, Texas

It’s a good thing you asked. You know why smokers have to pay higher premiums than non – smokers?

The thing is, it has been medically proven that smokers are prone to developing a lot of illnesses and complications because of the habit. Life insurance companies take that into consideration because smoking obviously leads to cancer, cardiovascular and heart disease. Because of that, smokers are deemed as high – risk. Thus explains your high insurance premium.

If you really can’t quit, I guess it’s best to try lessening the number of sticks that you’re smoking. Once you show proof that you don’t smoke as much – your insurance provider in might just give you a premium discount.

You also have another option. If you want to get a cheaper life insurance, then you can look at and compare all the insurance companies there are in Houston, Texas. Reader’s Question:

I have been smoking for 3 years and I need life insurance coverage. I have heard from my friends in Texas that smokers get high insurance premiums. How true is this? How can I get cheap smoker life insurance even if I am a heavy smoker?

Janah

Austin, TX

How are you today, Janah?

I am very glad you are looking into securing your future. Getting a life insurance is certainly one of the wisest decisions you can make, aside from quitting smoking. Yes, you heard me right on this. You better start to quit smoking now if you wan cheap life insurance.

Life insurance companies would see to it that they are investing their money well. Normally, premium rates are based on risk factors of policyholders. You can try to investigate from your friends who have smoker life insurance in Texas. Let say two people each have a life insurance from one company with varying levels of smoking rate: one is a heavy smoker and another is occasional. Any life insurance company would take a look at it this way: the heavy smoker is potentially a higher risk of premature death due to complications caused by smoking compared to the occasional smoker.

It doesn’t really mean that since you are a heavy smoker, you will be tied to a very expensive premium forever. Your life insurer actually encourages you to quit b y giving discount to smokers who give sufficient evidence that they are trying to quit or at least trying to reduce smoking.

If I were in your position though, I would really start to quit smoking. You do not only help your body become healthier and less prone to illnesses, you also get to save a significant amount on life insurance premiums.

I hope this helps you, Janah!

And all those people standing around telling you to sign here . . . and here . . . and there. You pause because you want to read all the fine print, but they just push you through it. I know, I know . . . we’re supposed to read everything we sign. But they are the professionals, right? I’m talking about the ones standing over your shoulder and pushing you though the closing of your first home or having you sign that paper work for that first new car purchase. We trust these people to give us good advice and to help us. And it just leaves a nasty taste in your mouth once you find out they just pulled a fast one ..
