Reader’s Question:

Hello from Dallas, Texas. Just a couple of questions: What is Life Insurance Policy? Does everybody need one?

Life insurance is an agreement entered into by an insurance company and a person, in which the person consents to pay a stipulated amount at regular intervals to the insurance company, in return for which the insurance company disburses an amount at the time of the person’s death or critical illness.

You can buy life insurance either for yourself or for another person, the difference being who the receiver of the insurance settlement is. However, you cannot buy a life insurance for just any other person. You have to have an “insurable interest” in the person that you would be buying insurance for. To have insurable interest in someone means that you would suffer some kind of financial loss in the event of his death. Included here are family members or business partners.

Generally, people purchase life insurance policies in order to make sure that they would receive a guaranteed amount in case they come down with something critical, or to protect their remaining loved ones financially after they die.

That, in a nutshell, is what life insurance is. Now, I cannot answer your second question for you. It all depends on how prepared you are already for events such as sickness, or on how much you want to leave something to those you left behind. In case you’re interested in purchasing a policy, contact an agent there in Dallas, Texas, as there are many kinds of life insurance policies.
